Module 01

PowerProtect Data Manager Deployment and Initial Configuration

›PPDM components — PPDM vApp (OVA deployed on vSphere), Cloud Edition (deployed in AWS/Azure/GCP), protection agents (application agent installed on protected hosts), DD storage (target for backup data)
›Deployment requirements — vSphere prerequisites (vCenter version, datastore sizing: 1 TB+ for PPDM appliance), network requirements (DNS, NTP, management VLAN), DD system (DD OS 7.x+, DD Boost licence)
›PPDM deployment — deploying OVA from vSphere Client (resource pool, datastore, networking), completing first-run wizard (admin password, licence, network settings, DD storage registration)
›Initial configuration — adding protected systems (vCenter, application hosts), configuring protection storage (DD systems, DD Boost MTrees), setting system-wide timezone and email notification preferences

›SLA Compliance — defining SLA objectives (RPO, retention), monitoring compliance violations, drilling into non-compliant assets, and configuring alert notifications (email, SNMP) for SLA breaches
›Search Engine — deploying PPDM Search nodes, indexing file-system and SQL backups for granular search, performing keyword/metadata search across backup copies, and restoring individual files from search results
›Protection Rules — auto-assigning assets to policies using dynamic rules (vCenter tags, hostname regex, app type), reducing manual policy assignment effort at scale
›Reports — built-in reports (asset protection status, capacity trends, SLA compliance, job history), scheduling automated email delivery of reports, and exporting CSV for executive dashboards
›Disaster Recovery — configuring PPDM DR (PPDM metadata backup to DD, DR bundle download), recovering PPDM appliance from DR bundle, and testing DR runbook periodically

›Identify PPDM components — PPDM appliance (vApp OVA or Cloud Edition), protection agents (per workload), DD storage target, and vProxy (agentless VMware proxy)
›List deployment requirements — vSphere 6.7/7.0+, 8 vCPU / 32 GB RAM / 1 TB+ datastore for appliance, DNS/NTP/management network, DD OS 7.x+ with DD Boost licence
›Deploy PPDM from OVA — importing OVF template in vSphere Client, selecting resource pool and datastore, configuring initial network properties, completing setup wizard (admin password, SMTP, licence key)
›Register DD storage — adding DD system (IP, DD Boost credentials), verifying DD Boost connectivity, and viewing registered storage capacity in PPDM dashboard
›Upgrade PPDM — uploading upgrade package via Administration → Software Updates, running pre-upgrade compatibility check, executing upgrade, monitoring rolling restart, verifying version and agent upgrade prompts
