7-Module D-PSC-DY-23 Programme

From OneFS foundations and network access configuration to advanced data protection, storage pooling, and enterprise monitoring.

  • Scale-out (horizontal node addition) vs scale-up (vertical CPU/memory upgrade) storage architecture
  • PowerScale product line: F-series all-flash, H-series hybrid, A-series archive, B-series backup
  • Gen 5 vs Gen 6 hardware differences — Gen 6 larger chassis, more drives, higher density, chassis-based S200/S210 vs 1U nodes
  • OneFS single filesystem spanning all nodes — distributed metadata, no SAN/NAS split
  • Cluster management: WebUI (port 8080), CLI via SSH, Serial Console, PAPI REST API
  • OneFS directory structure: root /ifs, base directory configuration, access zone directories
  • Cluster dependencies on external services: NTP (clock sync), DNS (SmartConnect), LDAP/AD (authentication)
  • Access zones: logical partitions with independent share namespace, protocol settings, auth providers, IP pools
  • Internal network: back-end InfiniBand for node-to-node communication
  • External network: front-end 10/25/40/100GbE for client access
  • Multi-tenancy with groupnets — independent routing tables, DNS resolvers, NTP servers per tenant
  • Subnets and IP pools within groupnets
  • Network configuration Gen 5 vs Gen 6: LACP failover, FEC, Round Robin link aggregation
  • SmartConnect: DNS delegation, SSIP static switchover IP, IP pool, load-balancing policies (round-robin, CPU, connection count, throughput)
  • RBAC — built-in roles: SystemAdmin / AuditAdmin / BackupAdmin / NetworkAdmin; custom roles for CLI/PAPI
  • ZRBAC — Zone-Based RBAC: platform API namespace isolation per access zone, delegating zone-admin privileges
  • User identifiers: UID/GID from POSIX, SID from Windows/Active Directory
  • ID mapping rules: resolve cross-protocol identity conflicts, AD user to UID mapping, on-disk identity
  • POSIX permissions: mode bits (read/write/execute for owner/group/other), chmod, chown
  • ACL permissions: Windows-style DACLs/SACLs, ACE types (allow/deny), inheritance flags, mixed-mode ACLs
  • Identity resolution order: local → LDAP → AD; mapping rule priority
  • OneFS caching: L1 per-node RAM cache (read ahead, write-back), L2 SSD read cache on H-series; use cases for each tier
  • SMB shares: SMB3 Continuous Availability (CA) — witness protocol, persistent handles for transparent failover
  • SMB Server-Side Copy (offload copy between shares), SMB protocol auditing to syslog/CEE
  • File filtering: restrict file types by extension per share
  • NFS exports: NFSv4 CA delegation, persistent state, session-based failover; export path/rootdir/maproot options; hosts allow/deny access control
  • S3 buckets: enabling S3 service, bucket creation (namespace mapping to /ifs path), S3 access key management, bucket policies
  • FEC overview: N+M protection (N data stripes + M parity — e.g. N+2:1 tolerates 2 drive + 1 node failure)
  • Reed-Solomon parity calculation; protection level notation (+2:1, +3:2, mirrored 2×/3×)
  • File striping across nodes: how OneFS splits files into chunks distributed across node pools
  • Requested vs suggested vs actual protection (verify with isi get -D on a file)
  • Data layout models: concurrent (write across all nodes — high throughput large files) vs streaming (write to fewer nodes — sequential workloads)
  • Storage pools (by node type), file pool policies, neighborhoods (geo-aware placement), global namespace, spillover, VHS (Virtual Hot Spare)
  • SmartPools: file pool policies matching by directory/extension/access time/size; tier to different node pool types; SSD usage for metadata, L2 cache, write journal
  • File pool policy creation: criteria, actions (set protection level, data access pattern, tiering); automated tiering, performance SSD pools, deep archive HDD pools
  • CloudPools: cloud tiering with stub files locally, data in AWS S3/Azure/GCP — transparent on-demand recall
  • SmartQuotas: directory/user/group quotas — advisory/soft/hard limits, grace period, quota domain, quota report scheduling
  • SmartLock WORM: enterprise mode vs compliance mode, clock authority locking, retention date, once-written delete restriction
  • SmartDedupe: post-process deduplication, dedupe domain, shadow store, estimated savings analysis and scheduling
  • SnapshotIQ: Copy-on-Write vs Redirect-on-Write, snapshot schedule policies, aliases, delete impact, restoring from snapshot
  • SyncIQ: async directory replication to remote cluster — replication policies, schedule/manual, bandwidth throttle, failover/failback (promote target, re-sync source)
  • HealthCheck: cluster health assessment (node status, drive health, network configuration, quota status, protection levels) — schedule via isi_gather_info or WebUI
  • DataIQ: data intelligence — classification, tagging, workflow automation, capacity forecasting, identify stale/cold data, user/group activity
  • InsightIQ: performance monitoring and reporting — per-protocol, per-node, per-client stats; historical trending; dashboard widgets (throughput/IOPS/latency/cache hit ratio)
  • isi statistics CLI: isi statistics query, isi statistics protocol, isi statistics drive, isi statistics heat — breakdown by access zone or client
