Module 01
VPLEX Concepts
  • VPLEX family models: VPLEX Local (single site), VPLEX Metro (dual active-active), VPLEX Geo (long-distance async); selection criteria per use case
  • Architecture: front-end directors (FC/iSCSI), back-end directors (array ports), distributed cache (DIMM Write Aside Cache), cross-connect modules
  • Data path: host I/O to front-end, cache lookup, back-end array I/O, cache coherency across sites via cross-connect; distributed volume invalidation protocol
  • VPLEX data services: TP awareness, tiering pass-through, RecoverPoint integration for CDP/CRR journal replication, VMware SRM support for DR
Module 02
VPLEX Installation and Setup
  • VPLEX hardware: VS2 or VS6 engine, director modules, cross-connect cabling, management station; rack and power requirements
  • Software setup: VPLEX configuration wizard; IP addressing; GeoSynchrony firmware selection and installation sequence
  • Management station: deploy Unisphere for VPLEX (GUI); configure vcli; connect management station to engine management ports
  • Back-end storage: present array LUNs to VPLEX back-end directors; discover and claim extents; verify all four directors to arrays
  • Front-end config: FC zone between VPLEX FE ports and host HBAs; configure VPLEX storage views (masking views)
Module 03
VPLEX Storage Provisioning
  • Building blocks: Extent (portion of LUN) → Local Device → Distributed Device (RAID-1 across two sites) → Virtual Volume (exported to hosts)
  • Create local device: claim extent, create local device from extent, promote to virtual volume, verify in Unisphere
  • Create distributed device: claim extents at both sites, create distributed device from both extents, promote to virtual volume, present to hosts
  • Storage views: create initiator group (HBA WWNs), target port group (VPLEX FE ports), add virtual volume, map storage view
  • Expand and reconfigure volumes: thin provisioning expansion on array; migrate volumes between storage views with zero downtime
Module 04
Volume Management and Data Protection
  • VPLEX Mobility (LiveMigration): non-disruptive migration between back-end storage arrays within same cluster; monitor migration jobs
  • Consistency groups: create CG for related virtual volumes; write-order fidelity across distributed volumes; use with RecoverPoint
  • RecoverPoint integration: configure splitter on VPLEX FE ports; RP intercepts I/O for journal-based CDP/CRR; configure RPO protection
  • VMware SRM integration: VPLEX as SRM storage replication adapter; site recovery for Metro/Geo deployments; test failover workflows
  • Best practices: cross-connect redundancy; director N+1; cache protection (mirrored DIMM); back-end array resiliency config
Module 05
VPLEX Monitoring and Troubleshooting
  • Monitoring tools: Unisphere health dashboard; performance statistics views; EMC Health Monitor (EHM) for event alerting; VPLEX CLI diagnostics
  • Key vcli commands: system status, director/CG/storage view status, extent and device listing; log collection for support cases
  • Alerting and events: configure SMTP/SNMP forwarding; interpret event severity; common events: director unavailable, WAN link degraded, cache error
  • Performance monitoring: FE IOPS/throughput per director; BE per-LUN latency; cache hit rate; cross-site write latency; bottleneck analysis
  • Troubleshooting: host cannot see volume (zoning/storage view); distributed volume degraded (cross-connect/site link); performance (cache/BE bottleneck)
