Certification Overview

What This Certification Validates

The NS0-184 exam earns the NetApp Certified Storage Installation Engineer, ONTAP (NCSIE) credential — validating field-level expertise in the physical installation, cabling, configuration, and handoff of NetApp ONTAP storage systems. This covers the complete new-cluster installation lifecycle: pre-installation documentation, physical cabling of nodes and disk shelves, initial ONTAP cluster setup, networking configuration (IPspaces, LIFs, VLANs), switch cabling and software, ONTAP configuration (aggregates, volumes, SVMs), security hardening, and formal customer handoff.

NCSIE is primarily targeted at NetApp professional services engineers, partner field engineers, and system integrators who physically install and commission NetApp AFF, FAS, and ASA storage systems at customer data centres. While NCDA (NS0-163) is recommended, it is not a hard prerequisite — NCSIE candidates should have at least 6–12 months of hands-on experience with NetApp ONTAP solutions. The credential validates the ability to go on-site, rack and stack, cable, configure, validate, and hand over a fully working ONTAP cluster.

What You Will Learn

Skills Covered

Prepare ONTAP cluster installation — identify required tools and documentation, understand pre-installation checklists, and describe physical cabling of ONTAP nodes and disk shelves per NetApp hardware guides

Understand ONTAP concepts for installation — identify how to update ONTAP, describe cluster controller components, create aggregates, and execute the required steps for installation or expansion of an ONTAP cluster

Configure ONTAP networking — describe how to configure ONTAP system networking (IPspaces, broadcast domains, LIFs), identify network types used with ONTAP clusters (management, cluster, data networks)

Install and configure ONTAP cluster switches — describe cabling for switched clusters, identify software needed for cluster switch configuration (Cluster Switch Health Monitor, ONTAP switch firmware)

Configure the ONTAP cluster — add or remove nodes, set up cluster peering, implement security hardening, and identify support resources required for troubleshooting ONTAP installation issues

Complete customer handoff — describe tools available to review the installation (Config Advisor, Active IQ), document the new cluster, and execute a formal handover of the commissioned ONTAP system to the customer

Target Audience

Who Should Take This Course

NetApp professional services engineers, field service engineers, and partner engineers who physically rack, cable, configure, and commission NetApp AFF/FAS/ASA storage systems at customer sites

System integrators and reseller technical staff responsible for end-to-end delivery of NetApp storage systems — from pre-installation planning through to customer acceptance and handoff

NCDA-certified (NS0-163) administrators who want to formalise and credential their installation and commissioning skills with the NCSIE specialist certification

Enterprise IT engineers at large organisations who perform their own internal NetApp hardware installations, system expansions, and new cluster builds across AFF, FAS, and ASA platforms

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NS0-184 NCSIE ONTAP certification?
NS0-184 earns the NetApp Certified Storage Installation Engineer, ONTAP (NCSIE) credential. It validates expertise in setting up, cabling, configuring, installing, testing, and handing over NetApp ONTAP storage systems (AFF, FAS, ASA). It covers the full field installation lifecycle — from pre-installation documentation through physical cabling, ONTAP software configuration, switch setup, security hardening, and formal customer acceptance and handoff.
Is NCDA (NS0-163) required before taking NS0-184?
NCDA is recommended but NOT required. NetApp recommends that NCSIE candidates ideally first achieve NCDA (NS0-163), as understanding ONTAP administration concepts strongly supports the installation topics. However, NS0-184 can be taken without NS0-163. The minimum recommendation is 6–12 months of hands-on experience with NetApp ONTAP solutions.
What physical installation skills are tested in NS0-184?
The exam tests: pre-installation documentation and site preparation; physical cabling of ONTAP controllers and disk shelves; initial ONTAP cluster setup (admin, AutoSupport, NTP); networking configuration (IPspaces, LIFs, VLANs); ONTAP cluster switch cabling and RCF software; adding/removing nodes and cluster peering; security hardening; using Config Advisor for post-installation review; and the customer handoff process including documentation.
What types of NetApp storage systems does NS0-184 cover?
NS0-184 covers installation of NetApp AFF (All-Flash FAS) A-Series and C-Series, FAS hybrid systems, and ASA (All-SAN Array) platforms. It also covers the associated NetApp cluster switches (Cisco Nexus 9300 cluster switch, NetApp CN1610) and the physical cabling patterns for disk shelves — NS224 NVMe-oF and DS224C SAS shelves.
What does Zetlan Technologies provide for NS0-184 training?
